Good morning Maestro, it is so much pleasure to meet you! The Glenn Miller Orchestra is the most famous jazz e swing ensemble in the world, and you have been conducting it for over thirty years, enchanting and arousing the enthusiasm of millions of people. Would you please tell us more about the story and the reality of the Orchestra.

We are the Glenn Miller Orchestra for Europe and I started working with this band almost 33 years ago. We are on the road in a lot of European countries and actually, we are very busy, as always in the 4th quarter of the year. In all these countries, people enjoy, listening to our music and some of them are coming back every year. For that reason, I hope, we can continue, working like this for some more years.
Therefore, since 1938 the Orchestra has been continuing the extraordinary legacy of an artist that, among fews, marked the jazz’s and even the Twentieth-century’s history overall. With some many years passed – and across two so different centuries – what keeps you so passionate at every single concert you perform? And how would you define your relationship with the sound of that period and with Glenn Miller’s figure?
Wil Sanden
I have a passion for swing music and I love playing Glenn Miller music, I think that goes for most of the musicians in our band. If you travel is much as we do and if you have been doing it as long as i do you have to love what you do. The love for the music keeps me going, and it helps if audiences appreciate what you do. We try to play our music in the style of Glenn Miller, the music made and played in that era is as good as it has ever been. I admire Glenn Miller for what he meant for music.
Verona, Udine and Genova are the three stops of the Italian tour you have just concluded. How do you feel about the way the Italian audience has welcomed you?
Wil Sanden
We are visiting your country since 1990, so our last visit in Verona, Udine and Genova was not that different. Playing in Italy is always great! The people are friendly and passionate and the venue’s we played are stunning. When we release our tour scheme the rest of the band is always exited when they see tour dates in Italy and so am I. It has always been very enjoyable to play our music in Italy.
Clearly inspired by one of Glenn Miller’s classics, “Jukebox Saturday Night” is the name of your tour, and of new album’s as well. Can you tell us more about it.

On this new CD, we recorded some famous Glenn Miller tunes, and also some famous tunes as a tribute to the “Swing Era”, to remember some other famous bandleaders and singers, as there are Frank Sinatra and the best singer in history, Ella Fitzgerald.
After the big success of your last concerts, in October, obviosly you could not leave without playing for us at least one more time. An in fact, you chose to award us with four more dates! Which are the next cities you will let us relive the emotions of the “Swing Era”?

In March 2019 there will be our next visit to Italy, with shows in Torino, Rome, Firenze and Trieste!

Wil – Siamo la Glenn Miller Orchestra per l’Europa e ho iniziato a lavorare con la band quasi 33 anni fa. Attualmente stiamo viaggiando attraverso molti paesi europei e siamo davvero carichi di impegni, come sempre in questo periodo dell’anno. In tutti questi paesi la gente si diverte ascoltando la nostra musica e alcuni di loro tornano ad ascoltarci ogni anno. Ed è per questo che spero di poter continuare a lavorare così per molti anni ancora.
Swing Fever – Dal 1938, quindi, portate avanti in Europa la straordinaria eredità artistica di un artista che come pochi altri ha segnato la storia non solo del jazz ma di tutta della musica del Novecento. Cos’è che a distanza di anni, a cavallo tra due secoli così diversi, continua ad emozionarvi ad ogni singolo concerto? E come definirebbe il vostro legame con il sound dell’epoca e con la figura di Glenn Miller?
Wil – Ho una passione per la musica swing e amo suonare la musica di Glenn Miller, e penso che questo valga per la maggior parte dei musicisti della nostra orchestra. Se viaggi tanto come noi, e se lo fai così tanto come l’ho fatto io, devi necessariamente amare ciò che fai. È l’amore per la musica che mi fa andare avanti, e se il pubblico apprezza ciò che fai è più facile. Cerchiamo di suonare la nostra musica secondo lo stile di Glenn Miller, poiché la musica composta e suonata in quell’epoca non ha eguali nella storia. Ammiro Glenn Miller per quello che ha significato per la musica.
Swing Fever – Verona, Udine e Genova le tre tappe italiane del tour da poco terminate. Siete soddisfatti dell’accoglienza del pubblico italiano?
Wil – Facciamo tour in Italia dal 1990; la nostra ultima visita tra Verona, Udine e Genova non è stata diversa dalle precedenti. Suonare in Italia è sempre fantastico! Le persone sono amichevoli e appassionate e i luoghi in cui suoniamo favolosi. Quando pubblichiamo il programma del nostro tour sia io che i miei musicisti siamo entusiasti delle date italiane del tour. Ci fa sempre molto piacere suonare la nostra musica in Italia.
Swing Fever – Ovviamente ispirato ad uno dei classici di Glenn Miller, “Jukebox Saturday Night” è il titolo del tour, ma anche del vostro nuovo album. Ci dica qualcosa in più.
